Susanne and I have just done a bespoke 2 day navigation skills course with Iain in the beautiful Borrowdale Valley in the Lake District.
We were highly impressed with Iain's knowledge and experience. His easy going nature enabled us to relax and learn the various skills involved in navigation. The course is structured well with each skill set blending into the next set. Suddenly you find yourself being able to find a 8 grid reference on the map and then walking and locating it on the ground!
When necessary his attention to our safety was obvious and reassuring.
One of the things Susanne and I did while on the course was to to pick Iain”s brains in relation to outdoor clothing and equipment. This was great as it is going to be a huge help in ensuring we choose the right gear the first time.
We both highly recommend anyone wishing to do a navigation skills course to contact Iain. We are sure you will enjoy it as much as we did and at the same time learning some essential skills to enjoy the outdoors. We have already decided our next course with Iain is going to be the summer mountain craft course. Just need to tell him now!
Have just finished a two day navigation course in Kentmere, not only did we pick the perfect weather for the weekend, but in Iain we picked the perfect instructor, there was nine of us on the course and Iain had time for everyone,I had some map reading skills before, but Iain taught me a lot of new skills ,and i am now confident to go out and use these on my own,i got more out of the weekend than i expected and i will be booking a course to take me to the next stage. Thanks Iain.
I have just completed a 2 day mountain navigation course with Iain in Kentmere, beautiful weather, great setting and excellent instructor. I now feel confident to navigate the hills and mountains safely with my family, I had a basic knowledge before starting this course but was very rusty and within a short space of time was able to read 8 digit grid references with ease.
I know have a good base to take me up to the next level and look forward to doing a different course with KMS in the future.
Thanks again Iain, Glenn
I recently took part on a two day navigation course with Iain at kms. I was a complete novice regarding using a map and compass Before the course but I now feel confident I could navigate safely and accurately in a mountain environment thanks to Iain's extensive knowledge and first class tuition. I look forward to completing more mountain based courses with KMS. Thanks again Iain
Had a great day with Iain taking instruction on trad leading and multi-pitch climbing techniques. Lot’s of good information tailored to meet our needs. Iain created a safe environment for us to be able to have a lot of fun while learning so we were able to go out a few days later and practice our new skills. Thanks Iain.
Wow... what a day! I had previously completed this route and booked for four friends to go on Easter Sunday 2014. The other three had never been on anything like this….
From the start Iain was professional but great fun! We had a BRILLIANT afternoon, the flexibility to give everything a go but no pressure was ace and everyone tried everything including the famous “cheese press”! We abseiled down waterfalls, climbed up them, squeezed through the “slot” and finished up in the fabulous Dr Banisters Washbasin.
Iain shared stories and facts along the whole route with enthusiasm and you always felt totally safe! As a day out this is a reasonably priced activity that will give you something completely different and leave you with memories you’ll love to share! (Beginners' Caving at Long Churn)
Thanks Iain, we had a brilliant time!! Bex, Mark, Gary and Chris!
Went canyoning with 6 other guys at Coniston. Top top day with Iain. My mate had not done it before and were skeptical beforehand… But everyone of them is eager to have another go. Iain made sure the day was fun. Tailored to what we wanted to do, exhilarating at times but we always felt safe. All equipment was provided and it was just a no hassle fun experience. Would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a top top time! Thanks Iain and hopefully see you again.
Fantastic experience with Iain. We booked a whole day and loved it so much we ended up booking another half day. The quality and knowledge was incredible and really tailored to our needs. We learned exactly what we wanted in a relaxed setting at a pace that suited us. We were both experienced indoor climbers wanting to branch out. Iain took us step by step through the whole process of trad climbing outdoors and was really encouraging to let us out on our own giving lots of great tips and advice and we have since started our collection of kit we need and brought our own rope! Will definitely book again to learn more!

I'd wanted to play on the Cuillin for years and was due to go on KMS's Skye trip in September last year but, inexplicably, no-one else booked so Iain had to cancel it. I was therefore really excited when I was able to get on this month’s trip at short notice. The weather was mixed, but that detracted very little from the trip. Iain books a cosy wee cottage with a cracking view across Loch Bracadale to the Inner Hebrides. The trip is run from this base, returning every evening for copious home-cooked food and good craic, talking about the day's activities, planning the next day's route and reminiscing about past trips. Iain has a passion for the outdoors and for Skye which is clearly evident. He has a great deal of experience both of mountaineering and of Skye, which shows in his ability to find the correct route in complex terrain in low visibility; and to keep people safe without curtailing their enjoyment. I always felt Iain was making the best decision for the group rather than himself. I think the best endorsement I can give is that I'd happily go on this trip again, having had a great time and made some good friend.
Spent a week in Skye with the aim of doing the Cuillin Ridge Traverse and what an experience it turned out to be. Iain is a first class guide whose knowledge of this area appears to be second to none. Not only the immediate area of Skye but every island situated off it. We completed 9 out of the 11 munros and only inclement weather defeated us. As we were about to tackle the Inn Pinn, Iain's eyebrows and Helen's hair warned of the presence of an electrical storm! the cottage we stayed in was excellent and Iain's idea of each client (although at no time did we feel like clients) preparing the meal each night was a great way to bond and relax after a hard day on the hills. One thing you should be prepared for is, at the most inopportune of times, say balancing precariously on an abseil, Iain will ask you to wait there while he takes yet another photo!! Seriously, if you've ever considered Skye, or any outdoor activity, KMS has it covered. What I must also mention is how fortunate we were to have such a good group. Despite the wonders of the Cuillin and Iain's expertise, I was incredibly fortunate to share it with Alison, Don, Helen and Steve. Don't think about it... do it!
