During our Winter Skills course with Iain, he made best use of the conditions to cover a broad range of basic skills. Rather than be a slave to a syllabus, Iain uses his experience to determine which skills and techniques are taught in any given location and snow conditions, giving the course a more relaxed and enjoyable feel…apart from being dangled head first, upside down for the ice axe breaking practice, of course! A useful, enjoyable and entertaining 2 day course with a very capable and personable instructor with a robust sense of humour.

With a planned week on the Cuillin Ridge with my son, I wanted to ensure I had the necessary rope/scrambling skills to ensure we could safely tackle the various peaks. A one-to-one session with Iain not only provided the requisite skills, it also greatly improved my confidence. Iain is not only a great tutor, he is also great company. Just spent 1 day learning trad climbing techniques with Iain in Langdale. Iain clearly really knows his stuff and was a great teacher on all aspects of gear placement and anchor set-up. He also took the time to take lots of photos as a reminder of the way to set up the gear- these are really helpful. We now definitely want to do more trad!

Myself and partner had a great weekend scrambling in Wales, learning loads and pushing ourselves on some more serious terrain. Throughout the course we felt we were in good hands and that we really got the most from our two days away. From location knowledge through to technical understanding it is clear Iain has tonnes of experience and is very good at passing it onto his clients. Won’t be long before we book our next course!!

We spent a day with Iain doing guided scrambling in the Lake District, and it was fantastic. We are new to harder scrambling, and Iain tailored the day perfectly to suits our ability. When climbing on more difficult grade 3 terrain, Iain made us feel safe and at ease, which meant we felt more confident and thoroughly enjoyed our day. We got great value for money, and Iain even provided us with some great photographs. Iain”s experience, knowledge and enthusiasm for the outdoors are second to none and we would not think twice about recommending Iain and Kendal Mountaineering Services. We’ll definitely be back!

We’ve been thinking of booking another day later in the year focusing on grade 3s and possibly grade 4s, or possibly doing a skills course, and so we’ll be in touch!

A fantastic day with Iain kayaking on Windermere and ghyll scrambling in beautiful Longsleddale. Iain was really patient with Robert who had not done either activity before and who finished the day both happy and exhausted. The off road drive up to the top of Longsleddale was also exciting!

Fantastic Navigation Skills day with Iain, learning skills to stop me,and any others who would chose to follow me, getting lost! The benefit of skilled, experienced and patient,teaching and practice on the hillside way surpasses anything you can read or get online.

Also great spot for Wild Camping – I’ll keep it quiet as don't want everyone using it!

Added bonus was a genuine off road experience in Iain’s Landie!

I recently went on a day course in the Lake District and have to say that I thought it was both extremely informative and also enjoyable. I found immediate confidence after discussing my ambitions with Iain as he immediately knew what would suit my needs from this. As you can see from Iain”s profile he is very experienced and this showed on the day. There were a few other climbers on the routes that day that were great examples of what not to do in terms of etiquette and safety, which was very apparent to me from what Iain had taught me in terms of the right way to do things. Iain took pictures throughout the day and has since sent me them with notes on each picture which allows me to re-familiarise and study.

Overall I had a great experience and felt I was in very good hands the whole day. I would highly recommend Iain and Kendal Mountaineering Services and I will look to use them again for my future climbing needs.

Thank you Iain,for such a great scrambling course – we’ll return to the Lakes with rope and gear as soon as we can! Susanne and I have just done a bespoke 2 day navigation skills course with Iain in the beautiful Borrowdale Valley in the Lake District.

We were highly impressed with Iain's knowledge and experience. His easy going nature enabled us to relax and learn the various skills involved in navigation. The course is structured well with each skill set blending into the next set. Suddenly you find yourself being able to find a 8 grid reference on the map and then walking and locating it on the ground!

When necessary his attention to our safety was obvious and reassuring.

One of the things Susanne and I did while on the course was to to pick Iain”s brains in relation to outdoor clothing and equipment. This was great as it is going to be a huge help in ensuring we choose the right gear the first time.

We both highly recommend anyone wishing to do a navigation skills course to contact Iain. We are sure you will enjoy it as much as we did and at the same time learning some essential skills to enjoy the outdoors. We have already decided our next course with Iain is going to be the summer mountain craft course. Just need to tell him now!
